Gym SEO: show up when someone two miles away searches.
Most new members come from a search on a phone, close to your gym, with no name in mind. Gym SEO is the work of being the answer to that search: the Google Business Profile, the listings, the neighborhood pages and the site structure, all tracked so you can see the leads it produces.
Where members come from
Why local search matters more than anything else you can buy
When someone searches "gym near me" or "personal trainer near me", Google shows three businesses on a map before anything else. Those three get most of the calls. For an independent gym, being in that map pack for your own neighborhood is worth more than any ad budget, because the person searching already wants what you sell and has not picked anyone yet.
The gyms I talk to are usually missing it for boring reasons. The Google Business Profile is half filled out. The address is written three different ways across Yelp, Fresha, Mindbody and Facebook, which Google reads as conflicting records. The website has no page that says which part of town the gym serves. Hundreds of five-star reviews sit on a directory where Google cannot see them.
None of that is hard to fix. It is just work nobody has been doing on purpose.
The work In the order it gets done
What gym SEO actually includes
Google Business Profile. Primary and secondary categories, services, a description written for the searches that matter, hours, photos that get updated, and a review process that keeps real reviews arriving. This is the single highest-return piece for a gym.
Listings that agree with each other. Same name, address and phone everywhere. Fixing the mismatches is unglamorous and it moves rankings.
Pages for how people search. One page per program or service, and where it matters one page per neighborhood you draw from. A strength gym in Stone Oak and one in Southtown are not competing for the same result.
Site structure Google and AI can read. Plain headings, structured data for the business, the services and the questions people ask, and fast pages. More people now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI where to train. Those systems cite pages built this way.
Tracked leads. Every call, form and booking from organic search lands in the CRM with the source attached, so the monthly report can show what SEO produced, not just where you rank.
Billing
A month with no work is a month you do not pay for
Managed SEO is a flat monthly fee. If a month goes by with no SEO work performed, that month is not charged. I have no incentive to invent busywork in a quiet month, and you can see in the report what was done and what it produced.
The market rates for this whole category, from software you run yourself to full agency retainers, are laid out on the cost guide.

About SEO for gyms
How long does gym SEO take to work?
Profile and listing fixes can move map pack rankings within weeks. Organic page rankings take three to six months to move meaningfully, then keep building after you stop paying for that month's work. The studio on the homepage relaunched in June and the meaningful comparison was three months later.
What does gym SEO cost?
Industry retainers for local SEO run from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month. Mine is a flat monthly fee in the low hundreds, quoted after one call, and a month with no work performed is not charged.
Do I need SEO or ads first?
Tracking first, so whatever you spend next can be measured. Then, if you need bookings this month, ads move faster. If you want leads that keep arriving without a daily budget, the website and SEO are the better place to start. Most gyms end up doing both, in that order.
Does SEO help a gym show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers?
Yes. AI assistants lean on clear, well structured pages and consistent listings. The work that gets a gym into the map pack is the same work that gets it named in an AI answer.

The first conversation is me looking at your site and your search visibility and telling you plainly what I would do first.
